Medication non-adherence can be conceptualized as a choice to not take psychotropic medications as prescribed, and nonadherence is currently estimated at approximately 49 percent in the Serious Mental Illness (SMI) population. Consequences of non-adherence include: re-hospitalization, lower quality of life, relapse of symptoms, increased co-morbid medical conditions, and increased suicidality. This webinar will review the effectiveness of Motivational Interviewing (MI) as an evidence-based, brief intervention to increase medication adherence. Special emphasis will be placed on application of the most current practice of MI including adaptations of skills to work more effectively with both positive and negative symptoms present within SMI and the use of value-card sorting to evoke change and enhance overall stability.
